I am one among those who love short films a lot as these tiny gems come with beautiful stories and we need not devote hours of time to watch them.These days the short films are getting great attention from people and not been overlooked as it used to happen earlier.Even the quality in production has been to the level of featured films.People put in lot of efforts in making short films not just to showcase their talent but also bring some key issues around, some beautiful morals etc..Here is the list of few best short films from around the world organized by country or region wise.These are definitely worth watching and many films from the list below were awarded with Oscar or Cannes film awards or LA shorts awards etc..,

Asia: 

  1. House on Little Cubes by Kunio Katô (Japan)As his town is flooded by water, an old man is forced to add additional levels onto his home with bricks (cubes) in order to stay dry…
  2. Bus 44 by Dayyan Eng(China)

    On the outskirts of a small town, a bus driver and her passengers encounter highway robbers. “Bus 44” carries a universal theme that travels across all boundaries and societies, trespassing the dark side and bright side of human behavior.

  3. Birthday Boy by Sejong Park (South Korea)Korean War, 1951 Little Manuk is playing on the streets of his village and dreaming of life at the front where his father is a soldier. He returns home to find a parcel on the doorstep and, thinking it is a birthday present, he opens it.
  4. Offside by Eraz Tadmor & Guy Nattiv(Israel)Offside was shot in Israel, during September 2005, at the security zone that separates between Israel and the Palestine Authority.

Australia:

  2. Signs by Patrick Hughes : A simple short film about communication.

  3. Miracle Fish by Luke Doolan: 8 year old Joe has a Birthday he will never forget. After friends bully him, he sneaks off to the sick bay, wishing everyone in the world would go away. He wakes up to find his dream may have become a reality.
  4. Sexy Thing by Denie Pentecost:  A perfect example of how one can narrate a beautiful story without  any dialogue and using images alone.
  5. Penny by John King: Penny is the story of one girl’s search for happiness and the discovery that she is not alone.

Belgium: 

  1. Flatlife by Jonas Geirnaert : A comical animation about flat life. It  won the Jury Prize for best shot film at Cannes in 2004.
  2. Gridlock by Dirk Beliën: It is the story of a businessman stuck in traffic, who calls home only to be told by his little girl that mummy is in the bedroom with ‘Uncle Wim’.
  3. Argentine Tangos by Guy Thys : A beautiful comedy drama where a middle-aged office-worker tries to fulfil his Christmas passion while keeping a snowy-white lie secret.
  4. Butterfly of Love by Nicolas Provost: Papillon d’Armour (Butterfly of Love) – Honorable Mention, Sundance Film Festival 2005, USA and Golden Gate Award, The Best New Visions Work, 47th San Francisco International Film Festival
  5. The Bloody Olive by Vincent Bal: It has got hilarious comedy with very funny take on the classic lover’s triangle.

Britain: 

  1. Photograph of Jesus by Laurie Hill : Short and Sweet has teamed up with Getty Images to launch a film challenge with a twist.Check out what it is.
  2. Post-It Love by Simon Atkinson & Adam Townley: Shy girl meets shy boy in the office, and they find a new way of expressing their affection in this endearing film.
  3. Keith Reynolds Can’t Make It Tonight by Felix Massie: This is Keith Reynolds and today is promotion day. Having worked at the company eight years he is the most senior Junior Business Analyst in the building. He’s been waiting for this day for a very long time.
  4. The Black Hole by Olly Williams and Philip Sansom: A sleep-deprived office worker accidentally discovers a black hole – and then greed gets the better of him

United States Of America:

  1. The Last 3 Minutes by Po Chan: A janitor whose life seems mundane on the surface but as it develops, many interesting layers are revealed.
  2. Vincent by Tim Burton: A young boy dreams of becoming a horror legend.
  3. The Chubbchubbs by Eric Armstrong: The first short animation film produced by Sony PIctures Imageworks (SPI) and won the Best Short Animation Oscar in 2003.
  4. World Builder by Bruce Branit: A strange man uses holographic tools to build a world for the woman he loves.
  5. Born Sweet by Cynthia Wade: 15 year old Vinh lives in a remote Cambodian village and has accepted his destiny — to be sick for the rest of his life with incurable arsenic poisoning. He dreams of becoming a karaoke star, winning the affections of adoring fans.
